The Fridge Is the Last Gallery Wall Nobody Curates
Take a look at your fridge door. Genuinely, go and look.
Most of them hold some combination of the following: a wedding invitation from a marriage that has since produced two children, a takeaway menu from a place that closed, an insurance company magnet, a plumber's magnet, and one photo curling at the corners. Nobody chose any of this. It accumulated.
Which is odd, because the fridge is one of the biggest flat surfaces in the house and the one you stand in front of most. Every other surface in a home eventually gets a decision made about it. The fridge just absorbs whatever arrives.
Why the dentist magnet wins by default
Free magnets have one enormous advantage: they show up without being sought. You will never go looking for a fridge magnet the way you go looking for a lamp. So the door fills with things nobody picked, and the standard of the surface is set by whoever last mailed you an advertisement.
Replacing that takes almost nothing. One or two magnets you actually like will quietly demote everything else, because the moment there is something good on the door, the plumber's number starts looking like litter and moves to the side of the fridge where it belongs.
Small, specific, and a bit silly beats large and generic
The magnets that survive on a door long term tend to share a shape: small, oddly specific, and slightly funny. Big decorative ones get in the way of the actual job of holding paper. Generic pretty ones stop being noticed within a week. But something with a joke in it keeps earning its place, because guests spot it and say something, which is more than the insurance magnet has ever achieved.

Being straight with you about what it is: a small decorative magnet, sized to sit on a door or a locker or the side of a filing cabinet. It is not a heavy-duty holder for a stack of documents. It is there to be looked at, and to hold a photo or a single sheet while it does.
