Why Your Desk Lamp Glares on Your Screen (and What a Monitor Light Bar Does Differently)

The 9 p.m. desk problem

It usually starts after dark. The overhead light is off, or it is on and bouncing off your screen. So you squint at a bright monitor floating in a dim room, and an hour later your eyes feel sandy and your head hurts. If you keep a notebook next to the keyboard, you are reading your own handwriting by the glow of a spreadsheet.

The obvious fix is a desk lamp. And the desk lamp is usually how the real problem starts.

Your lamp is not too bright. It is in the wrong place.

A lamp on the desk sits beside your monitor, at roughly the same height as your eyes. From there, its light does two things you do not want. Some of it reflects off the glass and washes out the picture. The rest shines from the edge of your vision, so your eyes keep adjusting between a bright point on the left and a dim page on the right. You can move the lamp, tilt the shade, or buy a dimmer bulb, but you are negotiating with geometry, and geometry does not compromise.

Screens are lit from behind. Desks need light from above. One light source cannot do both jobs from the side.

What a monitor light bar changes

A monitor light bar sits on top of your screen and points down. The LEDs face the desk, not your eyes and not the panel. Your keyboard, notes, and coffee mug get lit. The screen stays dark glass with a picture on it. Because the source is above your line of sight, there is no bright spot in your peripheral vision for your eyes to fight with.

It also gives you back the corner of the desk the lamp was renting.

What ours is like

Our monitor reading light bar is a slim matte black cylinder, 21 inches across, that clamps onto the top bezel of a monitor. No adhesive, no drilling, and it comes back off without leaving a mark. It runs on USB power, so it plugs into the monitor itself, a laptop, a hub, or a wall adapter, and the bottom-facing LEDs keep the brightness on the desk where you work.

It is a simple task light, and we mean that as a description, not a boast. There is no app, no remote, no color show. If you want a light strip that syncs to your games, this is not it. If you want to read, write, and type at night without a lamp reflected in your screen, that is the job it does.

If your desk feels harder to look at after dark, the fix is probably not a brighter bulb or a bigger lamp. Put the light above the screen, point it down, and let the monitor do its own lighting.
